For many people the mere thought of the sound of the dental drill sends shivers down their spine. Whether it is the thought of what the drill is doing that terrifies you or that you have had a traumatizing experience with the drill due to lack of anesthesia, there are things that you can do to help yourself cope.
The next time you know you are headed to the dentist and will encounter the dreaded dental drill, try these things to help you bypass the noise and distract the mind.
Coping with the Sound of the Drill
Unfortunately, once your brain has associated a sound with pain or discomfort, it is unlikely that you can "unlearn" that sound, or rather "unassociate" it. That being said, it therefore becomes necessary to find some other way to distract the mind or cancel out the sound of the drill if you wish to ease your anxiety about the situation. Here are three ways to ease your mind while encountering the drill:
Watch TV. Many dentist offices are now equipped with televisions strategically placed over the dental chair. If you do not have a dentist that you are attached to, then perhaps you could consider selecting a dentist that offers such an amenity.
Listen to music. If changing dentists to one that is equipped with televisions over the chairs is not an option, do not fret. There are other things that you can do to cope with the sound of that dreaded drill.
Bring your smart phone, iPod, or mP3 player with you and crank up some of your favorite tunes. Just don't start singing! Your dentist needs you to remain as still as possible!
Play on your phone. If you have your phone with you. Which, let's face it, who leaves home without it these days? Then you can also watch videos online, scan your email, scroll through your Facebook news feed and even play your favorite video game.
