Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

Posted on 9/20/2016 by Office - Boone DMD
A woman suffering from a sensitive tooth. There are many causes of sensitive teeth. They can be something you experience all of the time, or the sensitivity can come and go. No matter how often you experience sensitivity in your teeth, the condition is painful and can make it to where you change your life to accommodate the pain.

Instead of changing your life, you should go and talk with your dentist about how you can treat your tooth sensitivity.

Knowing the Cause Helps Form the Treatment

There are three main causes of sensitive teeth. First, you could have sensitive teeth due to exposed dentin. This can happen from a chip or fracture of your tooth, a cavity or other form of tooth decay, or a filling that is leaking into your tooth.

Second, you could have enamel that is worn down, leaving holes for cold, hot, sweet foods and salty foods to get through. Finally, you may have sensitive teeth because your teeth have begun to erode from the foods you have been eating or lapses in your dental care.

Once the cause of your sensitivity is narrowed down, you can then begin to treat the issue. Your dentist will want to take a look at your teeth and make sure that there are no holes in them that could be causing the pain. Then, he or she will help address the erosion on your teeth if there is any. Then, they will likely advise that you get a sensitive toothpaste and a mouthwash that will help rebuild the enamel of your teeth.

Simple treatments are often all that is needed when you are living with sensitive teeth. Instead of dealing with the pain or changing what you eat and drink, make an appointment by contacting our office today!
