A collection of toothbrushes beside each other.
There are many different things that you can do to help keep your toothbrush safe. Not only should you make sure that no one else is using your toothbrush, but you should also be keeping it sanitary and replacing it regularly.

If you have not been taking proper care of your toothbrush, it is never too late to start. Here are a few things you can do to make sure that your toothbrush is always kept safe.

How to Keep Your Toothbrush Safe

First, you need to make sure that you and only you are using your toothbrush. Any time you share your toothbrush, you run the risk of getting whatever germs another person has in their mouth, into yours. If they have caries, you may get germs that could lead to you getting it, too.

Second, you need to sanitize your toothbrush regularly. You can do it daily if you want to soak your toothbrush in an antiseptic mouthwash between brushing, or you can do it one or two times each week by boiling it or running it through a dishwasher load. This kills off bacteria and germs to keep your mouth safe.
Finally, you need to make sure you are replacing your toothbrush regularly.

When you are healthy, it should be replaced about every three months. However, if you get sick or get cold sores regularly, you need to replace your toothbrush at each occurrence. That way, you do not keep exposing yourself to the same germs repeatedly.
