Managing Your Stress Can Decrease Jaw Clenching

Posted on 12/30/2016 by Office - Boone DMD
A woman suffering from severe stress clenching her jaw.
One of the most common things for people to do when they get stressed out is to clench their jaws. Very few people realize how often they do it. It becomes a subconscious response. The only way that you are prone to notice how often it happens is if you have someone watching you and pointing it out.

That, or you may notice it if clenching starts to cause pain due to cracking a tooth. Instead of dealing with the pain, it is better to deal with the stress. That way, you can relax and stop potentially hurting your teeth.

Keeping Your Stress Down Can Come with Starting a New Hobby

Hobbies are great ways of de-stressing. They give you something fun to look forward to. If you are looking for something fun to do that relaxes you, here are a few suggestions.

If you like spending a lot of time outside, then consider walking, jogging, running, or hiking. It keeps you active, and gives you something physical to do out under the sun. You can also try biking, gardening, or even just reading in the park.

For those who prefer being inside, you can give baking, woodworking, sewing, reading, or writing a try. These are all great hobbies that can give you something valuable in the end and help you relax while you are doing them.

Give a few hobbies a try and see which ones you find yourself looking forward to most. It may take a few different options to find the right one, but that is alright. The more fun you have trying, the less you are focusing on stress.

If you do know that you were clenching your jaw when you got stressed, go in and see your dentist. There may be bits of damage you didn't even know were there that they can fix up.
