How Long Do Dental Crowns Usually Last?

Dental Crowns Boones Landing Dental Center OR 97070-7845In general, a dental crown is placed on your tooth to strengthen it, improve its appearance or restore its shape. The crown is placed right above the gum line and covers the entire tooth. So, how long do dental crowns usually last?

How long a crown lasts depends on your oral health habits and varies from patient to patient. With proper oral care and regular checkups, a dental crown can last up to 30-years. Let's examine what affects the lifespan of a crown.

The Materials it's Made Of
A dental crown can be made of several materials and their durability can affect how long it lasts in your mouth. The most durable material is dental alloy, the metallic looking crown. Aesthetically, they are not the most popular, but they last longer.

Porcelain crowns are made to match your teeth and we regularly recommend that patients replace alloy crowns for the porcelain kind due to the increased fears of mercury in the mouth.

Oral Hygiene

Having good oral hygiene habits can increase the lifespan of your dental crown. Brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day and keeping your regular appointments can help your dentist take care of your dental crowns.

Eating Habits
While alloy or porcelain dental crowns are durable, they still need to be taken care of. In addition to having good oral health habits, you need to be careful about what you're eating. Chewing gum, eating ice or hard foods, drinking sugary drinks and teeth grinding can all affect the look and durability of your dental crown.

Depending on the severity of a crack our dentist may be able to fix a dental crown with composite resin, but there's always a chance that you will need a new one. If you got your crown when you were younger, you will most likely need to have it replaced.
