How to Balance the pH In Your Mouth

Ph Levels Boones Landing Dental Center OR 97070-7845The pH balance you have in your mouth is very important when you want a healthy mouth. The things that we eat and drink each day affect that delicate balance.

So, can how we clean our mouth. Some items we consume can raise the acidity in our mouths, leaving us with a higher risk of damaged teeth.

Other items are basic, and they bring the acid levels back down, helping to protect our teeth. Here are some tips on keeping the pH levels balanced within our mouths.

It All Starts with Knowing What Foods Raise the pH Balance

The most important part of figuring out how to balance out the pH is knowing what foods raise and lower those levels. Acids do a lot of damage to our teeth when not balanced out. They can lead to decay, sensitivity, and erosion of our enamel.

The foods many of us eat affect these levels, including things like citrus fruits, tomato products, and sugars. The drinks we consume can do that, too, including sodas, coffee, and sports drinks.

In order to balance this out, we need to consume items that are more alkaline, or basic. This can include a lot of different foods, such as honey, nuts, and produce. Not all produce is alkaline, with tomatoes being the prime example. However, most greens are something that would fall under the alkaline category.

If you can, opt for salads regularly, and add nuts and a honey-based salad dressing to help reduce the acidity in your mouth.

Learning to reduce the acid in your mouth and keep your pH balanced can go a long way towards keeping your mouth healthy. Call our office to find out more things to do to help protect your mouth from acid erosion.
