The Dangers of Pool Water in Terms of Your Oral Health

Posted on 2/20/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
The Dangers of Pool Water in Terms of Your Oral HealthUnder the hot summer sun, nothing is more enjoyable than a dip in a cool pool. Unfortunately, if you aren't careful, pool water can have some negative effects on your oral health. Keep your teeth healthy this summer while swimming.

How Pool Water Can Affect Your Teeth

The concern about pool water is in the chlorine. Too much chlorine will increase the pH level of the pool water, and this could lead to enamel erosion. As the enamel wears down with frequent exposure to acidic pool water, the teeth may look discolored or even transparent. Sensitivity to hot and cold may set in, and cracks and chips could result.

How to Keep Your Teeth Safe

While pool water isn't great for your teeth, this doesn't mean that you have to stay out of the water all summer long. There are steps that you can take to keep your mouth healthy.

•  Inspect pools for signs of erosion. When you are visiting a pool, look for signs of erosion to liners, ladders, and railings. This could mean that the pH level of the water is too high and may be at a level that is dangerous for your teeth.
•  Maintain a good pH value in your own pool. If you own a swimming pool, test the water regularly to ensure the pH level stays at an appropriate value.
•  Rinse out your mouth. Should pool water get in your mouth, don't brush your teeth right away. Instead, rinse out your mouth with tap water, and then wait for about a half an hour. This will allow the pH of your mouth to return to a normal level, and then it will be safe to brush.

Keep your teeth healthy during the summer or any other season. Give our office a call today to set up your next appointment.
