Mouth Guards Can Provide Better Sleep

Posted on 3/10/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
Mouth Guards Can Provide Better SleepA dental mouth guard (a.k.a. night guard, bite guard, occlusal guard/splint) is meant to even out the pressure across your jaw. It does this by creating a physical barrier between your upper and lower teeth.

In doing so it will protect your teeth from developing any additional damage to your teeth - things like breaking your teeth, biting your lips, or injuring any other part of your face or jaw. It will also help reduce your teeth grinding at night because it's similar to the same type of mouthguard you'd use in a contact sport.

How to Know if you Really Need a Mouthguard

When you're unable to get a good night's sleep, waking up with a headache, or having your jaw hurt every morning, we may suggest you wear a mouthguard to help reduce these symptoms. This will help stop you from damaging your teeth and any dental work you may have.

It'll also help ward off any future dental issues too. In fact, studies have shown that wearing a mouthguard will help prevent TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint disorder). Clearly, there are benefits here.

How a Mouthguard Benefits You

Now that you understand the benefits of wearing a mouthguard, you should also know why these work is because they provide a cushion between your teeth. Instead of wearing down your teeth you'll now wear down the mouthguard instead.

This will give your jaw a rest as well. Of course, anyone who sleeps with you or shares the same room as you will also appreciate this because they'll be able to get a better night's sleep too.

There are many benefits to wearing a dental mouth guard at night. If you'd like to learn more about them and how they could possibly benefit you, give our office a call to set up an appointment today.
