Caring for the Rest of Your Mouth When You Have Partial Dentures

Posted on 4/20/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
Caring for the Rest of Your Mouth When You Have Partial DenturesDo you have partial dentures? If so, you probably love the way that this appliance restores your smile, but proper care is needed to keep the rest of your mouth healthy. These tips can help.

Brush Regularly

Even with partial dentures, regular brushing and flossing is a necessity. You will also want to brush your mouth once the denture has been removed to properly clean the inside tissues. Be sure to reach the ridges where the partial denture sits, as well as the inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, and the tongue. Daily rinses with warm salt water may also be beneficial to keep your gums healthy.

Remove Your Partial Dentures at Night

Regardless of how comfortable your partial dentures might be, you should never sleep with them in. Removing your dentures at night gives your oral tissues the opportunity to breathe. This will also prevent irritation, gum infection, and discomfort in the tissues under the dentures.

When storing your partial denture at night, be sure to keep it in a denture solution or water. Otherwise, the acrylic could dry out with time. This could change the fit, and the denture may become brittle.

Get Help for Sores
If you wear partial dentures, there is a chance you may experience sore spots. These occur if the denture puts too much pressure on one particular area. Sore spots could look like small wounds on the gum tissue, and if you experience this problem, you should come into our office. Sometimes a simple adjustment can relieve the pressure, but you should never attempt to adjust your appliance on your own.

This could cause permanent damage to the partial denture. Is it time for your next appointment, or have you noticed signs of a problem with your partial denture? If so, give us a call to schedule an evaluation.
