How Can You Improve Oral Hygiene?

Posted on 5/8/2023 by Office - Boone DMD
How Can You Improve Oral Hygiene?Your oral health is an important component of your overall health and neglecting it can increase your likelihood of contracting diseases such as heart disease, respiratory problems, and dementia. These are some ways to improve your dental health:

Clean Your Teeth Twice a Day

Clean your teeth thoroughly after each meal to eliminate any food particles that have stuck between your teeth and gums. Brushing your teeth on a regular basis ensures that they remain white and combats bad breath and gum disease.

Floss Regularly

Flossing is essential for healthy dental hygiene. It helps remove food stuck between the teeth during the day before it becomes plaque. Floss at least once a day, preferably shortly before bed or after each meal, to keep your gums healthy and prevent cavities.

Stop Smoking

Another way to improve your oral hygiene is to quit smoking. Smoking and tobacco use can cause tooth stains, bad breath, and other serious health problems, such as lung and mouth cancer. Smokers have weak teeth, irritated gums, and a lower rate of success with dental implant treatments.

Choose the Right Toothbrush and Change it Regularly

Numerous toothbrush options are available, but soft-bristled and electric toothbrushes are the best to keep your teeth healthy and white. They help you clean your teeth gently without scrubbing them excessively or causing long-term injuries such as enamel erosion and receding gums.

Eat a Balanced Diet

A nutritious and balanced diet is essential for good oral health. For example, eating an apple every day can help clean your teeth and avoid cavities while satisfying your sugar craving. Crunchy veggies like celery and carrots ensure your gums are active and minimize cavities. A healthy diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, fish, fruits, and poultry will enhance your dental and overall health.
