How To Fix a Chipped Tooth

Posted on 7/10/2023 by Office - Boone DMD
How To Fix a Chipped ToothThere are several ways that you could chip your tooth, these include sports or even falling down. Although the enamel is very strong, it can still chip or break. A chipped tooth is painful and uncomfortable. However, there is no need to be alarmed, with the help of a few techniques, your dentist can easily fix the chipped tooth.

Before you can see a dentist, there are a few things that you can do at home. Rinse the mouth with mouthwash or warm water. Thereafter, with the use of a cold press, apply pressure to the outside area. You can also try over-the-counter medication. You can now book an appointment with your dentist, who will suggest the following procedures to fix the tooth;

Bonding

Dental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite resin material to the teeth to fix the chipping. It is perfect for fixing the small or simple chipping of enamel. It is a simple procedure that can be done in a matter of minutes. The dentist will apply the composite resin to your tooth to create a mold. Thereafter, the mold is shaped into the chip to conceal it.

Dental Crown

If the chip is severe, then the dentist may opt to file away the remaining part and insert a crown. These crowns are made from different materials, such as metal or porcelain, or ceramic.

Veneers

Dental veneers are also a great option for fixing a chipped tooth. Veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that resembles the tooth. It is placed over the surface of the tooth. Veneers are a great alternative for fixing chipped teeth, especially for the ones at the front of the mouth.

Root Canal

If the crack or chip goes beyond the tooth surface, then the dentist may suggest a root canal. This only happens in rare cases where tissue in the root is affected. The dentist will remove the damaged tooth pulp and clean the area. Thereafter, a dental filling is added to fill the area. A temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth.

Most people think that a chipped tooth is not worth a trip to the dentist. This should not be the case as once a tooth chips or breaks, it becomes prone to infections that could worsen over time. Thus, if you have a chipped tooth, consult with a dentist.
