Is Flossing Teeth Really Necessary?

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Office - Boone DMD
Is Flossing Teeth Really Necessary?Flossing should be noticed and addressed in daily oral hygiene routines. Some wonder if flossing is necessary, especially if they brush their teeth regularly. Ensure you talk to the dentist to know the right way to floss. Also, ask how many times you need to floss in a day.

Remove Plaque

The ability of flossing to eliminate plaque is one of the main reasons it is essential. Plaque accumulates on the surfaces of teeth and along the gum line.

While brushing can effectively clean the outer surfaces of teeth, it cannot reach the tight spaces between teeth where plaque can accumulate. By removing plaque from these locations with floss, you can stop it from getting there and lower your risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Prevent Cavities

Flossing plays a crucial role in preventing cavities. Cavities often develop between teeth, where food particles and bacteria can become trapped. These elements, if not removed, can help create dental plaque, which can cause tooth decay. Regular flossing helps to dislodge these particles, keeping the interdental areas clean and reducing the likelihood of cavities.

Reduce The Risk Of Bad Breath

Flossing can also help combat bad breath or halitosis. When food particles remain lodged between teeth, they can start to decompose, producing an unpleasant odor. By flossing regularly, you can remove these food particles and prevent the accumulation of bacteria, thus reducing the risk of bad breath.

Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease is when your gums swell and get infected. Flossing is essential in preventing gum disease as it removes plaque and debris from the gum line, where bacteria can cause gum inflammation. Regular flossing can dramatically lower the chance of developing gum disease and the issues that go along with it. Talk to our dentist today to ensure you do not have any more doubts about flossing.
