What Causes White Bumps On the Gums?

White bumps on the gums may be painful and uncomfortable, especially when drinking or eating. They can also result in severe oral issues, depending on the cause. In some cases, they appear small or harmless but can also present themselves as large and painful lumps that require quick medical attention. Read on and learn 3 common causes of white bumps on the gums and how to deal with them.

Canker Sores

Canker sores appear as small white or yellow lesions on the gums. They can also develop on the tongue or inside of the lip. While there is no exact cause of this oral issue, mouth injuries, stress, and acidic foods may play a role. Most canker sores are not harmful or dangerous. They usually disappear on their own within a few weeks. However, severe canker sores may be larger and more painful. In this case, you may need a professional dentist to help alleviate the pain and discomfort.

Periodontal Abscess

A periodontal abscess is a pocket of pus that accumulates due to bacterial infection. When you have this condition, you may experience yellow pus or white balls coming out of the swollen gums. Abscesses are painful and may get worse when you eat or lie down. The pain can also extend to the ears and jaws, which can affect your daily activities. The best way to deal with periodontal abscess is by seeking professional care. A dentist will remove the pus and treat the cause of the infection.

Oral Cancer

White bumps on the gums can be a sign of oral cancer. Other signs of oral cancer are sore throat, loose teeth, red patches on the gums, or difficulty swallowing or chewing. If you suspect that the white bumps might be cancerous, you need to schedule an appointment with a dentist for evaluation. When treated earlier, oral cancer may not cause severe damage to your mouth. Visit our office, and our specialist will examine your gums to determine the root cause of white bumps on your gums.
