How Do You Clean Under a Dental Bridge?

Posted on 2/15/2024 by Weo Admin
A selection of toothpasteDental bridges serve as replacements for lost teeth, allowing individuals to use their teeth normally. Unlike dentures, which require regular removal and cleaning, dental bridges offer a more comfortable and convenient solution. However, it is important to ensure your dental bridges are well maintained to ensure their longevity. A dental bridge typically consists of two or more dental crowns, known as abutments, placed on adjacent teeth. These crowns connect the tooth replacements.

The Importance of Cleaning Under a Dental Bridge

The ability to chew comfortably also increases the necessity of cleaning the dental bridge thoroughly. Even though the pontic (fake tooth) often rests close to the gum surface, there are still micro gaps between it and the tooth ridge, which can lead to the accumulation of bacteria and plaque. This poses risks such as dental diseases, halitosis, and the potential decay of teeth under the bridge, as well as gum disease. If not properly maintained, this may result in the loss of both the bridge and the abutment teeth.

Effective Cleaning Methods

Due to the bridges being joined, regular floss cannot go between the teeth within the bridge from the top surface, making it challenging to clean using traditional methods. It is recommended to use an interdental brush, floss threader, water pick, or super floss to clean under the bridge. Before flossing, brushing the teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush is advised to remove most of the plaque. This ensures that the teeth are well maintained after flossing.

Dietary Considerations and Bridge Care

Caring for dental bridges also involves mindful eating, as certain foods can damage the bridges. Consuming hard substances like ice or candies can be particularly harmful, as these can damage a porcelain bridge. Proper maintenance of dental bridges does not necessarily result in an increase in the time spent on oral hygiene. Overall, with the right care and cleaning techniques, dental bridges can be effectively maintained, ensuring their durability and the continued health of your teeth.
