Why Good Communication with Your Dentist is So Important

Posted on 4/30/2016 by Office - Boone DMD
A patient consulting a dentist about her oral health.Your dentist is an important part of your healthcare team, so it is crucial that you maintain good communication with him. Having an open line of communication can help you to better understand your treatment plan, your dental needs, and how to better care for your teeth.

You'll also feel more comfortable to tell your dentist if you are experiencing a problem or discomfort during a dental procedure, all of which can lead to a more enjoyable dental experience.

Take an Active Role in Your Dental Treatment

When it comes to any type of healthcare, including dental treatment, it is important that you are a good advocate for yourself and that you take an active role in your treatment.

When you feel pain, it is easy to feel out of control and that there is nothing that you can do about it, but you are still in the driver's seat when it comes to your treatment. You and your dentist are a team and need to work together to find what option is best for your mouth.

Explore Your Options
There are many dental problems in which several treatment options might be available. Without talking to your dentist, you might not fully understand the pros and cons of all those available. If you have questions about a treatment option that is presented, make sure that you ask so that you fully understand it.

Alleviate Your Nervousness and Apprehension

Many people are nervous about going to the dentist and having certain procedures done, but that doesn't mean that you should hold it in.

Instead, make sure you communicate any feelings of anxiety that you are experiencing with your dentist. This can help him to better understand what you are going through, and he may be able to use laughing gas and other sedation options to help you stay comfortable.

Please contact us if you have any questions about communicating your dental anxiety.
