Is It Deadly If You Get Oral Cancer?

Posted on 8/20/2016 by Office - Boone DMD
An elderly woman with oral cancer receiving a dental exam. All types of cancer have their risks, but oral cancer is a little bit different than most types of cancer. While it could be deadly if left untreated for quite some time, oral cancer is considered to be one of the more curable types of cancer.

Your dentist and your doctor will work in tandem to help treat your oral cancer, giving you the best chances of being able to get past your cancer, and get on with your life.

Understanding Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is any type of cancer that happens in your mouth, neck, or the immediate area of your head that surrounds the mouth. Typically, oral cancer can be removed through surgery, and the treatment that follows surgery will keep it from coming back.

Your dentist and your doctor are going to regularly check for any type of new growths through procedures like examinations, x-rays, and scans to make sure nothing new shows up. You should also let them know if you experience any additional discomfort in the areas around your ears, throat, gums, jaw, and your lymph nodes under the jawline.

While it may be difficult to hear the word cancer, oral cancer is one that you should feel confident that it can be treated. Your dentist is doing checks each time you go in for a checkup, so the chances are, your cancer was caught in its infant stages.

This makes it easier to treat, and gives you the best chances of being able to go on with a normal life following your diagnosis and treatment. Cancer can be intimidating by its very nature, but having a solid relationship with a dentist you trust is going to help you move beyond the fear, and tackle your treatment head on.
