Why Some Teeth Get White Spots on Them

Have you recently looked into the mirror at your smile, and noticed that some of your teeth have small white spots on them? Perhaps you have had those spots there for a long time, but never asked what they were. There are several causes for this condition. Some of them are nothing to worry about, but others signal a problem. Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do about them.

Causes of Dental Spots

If you have had dental spots since childhood, then there are likely two causes. The first is having ingested too much fluoride during childhood. The other is having some type of damage to the tooth when the enamel was hardening. Most of the time, there is nothing you can do about the white spots at this point in time.

If your white dental spots are new, chances are, you need to go in and see your dentist. It could be that you have a new bit of plaque that formed on your teeth. This could appear as a different color on your teeth, making it appear white. It could also be an area where your tooth is in the early stages of decay. When the acids and tartar begin to build up on a tooth, it thins the amount of enamel you have. This can make the enamel appear whiter than the surrounding tooth's surface.

For anyone with new white spots on their teeth, it is important that you see your dentist. Let them take a look at your mouth and see if they can determine the cause. Your dentist is going to know how to handle this situation best. Let them examine your mouth, possibly even give it a deep cleaning, and see what can be done for the spots on your teeth.
