Main Types of Tooth DiscolorationYour teeth can stain by either changes in the tooth or by eating or drinking different things, coffee is one of the things that can stain your teeth. There are three different types of tooth discoloration. They include extrinsic, intrinsic, and age related.Extrinsic Extrinsic stains happen when the enamel the outer layer of the tooth, starts to stain. This happens when you drink coffee, cola, wine, and eat different foods. If you smoke cigarettes, this can also cause these extrinsic stains on your teeth. Do not smoke and try to cut back on the coffee, wine, cola, or the foods that can cause stains. Intrinsic Intrinsic stains are stains that appear on the dentin on your teeth. This is when your teeth start to turn yellow because the dentin is starting to wear away. These stains happen when you had too much fluoride when you were a child, your mother may have used a certain kind of antibiotic during her second trimester of pregnancy with you, you may have used certain antibiotics while you were a child at the age of eight, maybe you had some type of trauma of the teeth when you were a kid, you may have had permanent trauma to the teeth that caused bleeding, or you were born with a rare condition by the name of dentinogenesis imperfecta which causes different colors of stains on your teeth. Age Related Tooth DiscolorationAs you get older, you may experience both extrinsic and intrinsic tooth stains.
