Does Brushing Too Often Cause Damage to Your Gums?

Brushing Boones Landing Dental Center OR 97070-7845Since brushing your teeth is such a good thing, you may not think it's possible to brush too much. Unfortunately, it is. In most cases, it's not the fact that you're brushing your teeth four or five times a day.

The problem lies in the fact that you're not using the correct brushing method or that you're using a bad toothbrush. Older toothbrushes or toothbrushes with hard bristles can brush away the enamel and dentin from your teeth, damaging them. They can irritate your gums, too, and make them bleed.

How to Properly Brush Your Gums

If you practice good brushing habits, you likely brush your teeth when you get up and when you go to bed. You should brush after lunch, too, but it's not always easy to do so since you may be at work or at school.

It might surprise you which of our patients often have the more damaged gums and teeth. It's not always those who only brush every now and then. Instead, our patients who are very keen on brushing several times a day often hurt their gums!

That's because they don't brush the right way. They put too much pressure on their toothbrush, don't change their brushes right away, or use a hard toothbrush that isn't very gentle.

This can cause your gums to recede, which can then cause a number of problems. If you don't change your brushing habits, you could eventually develop gum disease, have pain in your gums, or even lose teeth.

What Can You Do?

If you've noticed that your gums hurt or bleed after you brush, it could be a sign that you're not brushing properly or need a new toothbrush.

When that happens, you should make an appointment to come talk to us about brushing. We can show you how to properly brush and talk to you about finding the right toothbrush.
