Do You Need Panoramic X-rays?

Posted on 1/10/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
Do You Need Panoramic X-rays?You'll typically have x-rays taken of your teeth once a year, as these images are an important way for us to determine the health of your mouth.

However, with so many x-ray options available, you may be wondering if you need panoramic x-rays. By learning more about these helpful images, you can feel more comfortable with them at your next appointment.

Why Might You Need a Panoramic X-Ray?

Panoramic x-rays will provide a view of the entire mouth, including the jaw, the teeth, the temporomandibular joint, and the sinus cavity. They are a great tool when it comes to many potential concerns, some of which include:

•  Impacted teeth
•  Tumors
•  Cysts
•  Degenerative joint disease
•  Infections

If you are experiencing pain or other issues that can't be ruled out with an oral exam, we may call upon panoramic x-rays to determine the source of the problem. It is also important to note that dental x-rays use extremely low doses of radiation, so panoramic x-rays are perfectly safe.

Are There Other Types of X-Rays?

While panoramic x-rays might give a snapshot of your entire mouth, they don't let us see small problems like tiny cavities. In order to diagnose those types of issues, you may need a different type of x-ray:

•  Bite-wing. These x-rays can detect cavities found between the teeth, and they can also help us to identify periodontal disease by looking for signs of bone loss.
•  CT. This 3D imaging tool is most commonly used for dental problems like wisdom teeth, dental implants, and bone grafting.
•  Peri-Apical. If we need to check out the roots of your teeth to search for signs of an infection, a peri-apical x-ray might be the diagnostic imaging tool of choice.

Whether it is time for your next cleaning or you are experiencing a dental problem, we are here to help. Give our office a call today to set up your next appointment.
