What Does Sugar Do to Your Teeth?

Posted on 4/10/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
What Does Sugar Do to Your Teeth?Ahh...sugar. Nearly everyone on the planet loves sugar in some form. And what's not to like? After all, sugar is one of the best things about life with it being added to some of our favorite foods. While sugar is an amazingly good treat, it is not good for your body- especially your teeth. What happens to your teeth when you eat sugar? Keep reading to find out.

Sugar and Your Teeth

The most interesting fact about sugar and your teeth is that sugar by itself does not harm your teeth, no matter how much sugar you eat. However, sugar provides food for the bacteria that live in your mouth. Combined with sugar, the bacteria create acids in your mouth. The more sugar you eat, the more acids are made in your mouth. Over time, these acids act on the enamel on your teeth, and cause cavities and other damage. These holes created by acids can cause cavities, pain, gum disease and loss of a tooth or several teeth.

Luckily, there are ways that you can prevent tooth decay. You can brush and floss regularly. You can also visit us every six months so that we can check your teeth for problems, including tooth decay and cavities. We can help you pinpoint spots on your teeth you might be missing with your toothbrush or dental floss. If you do have tooth decay, we can talk with you about products we can use to help you keep your teeth healthy, or if you need it, additional services to help you restore teeth damaged by sugary acids.

We want to make sure you have the healthiest smile possible. Come on in and visit us or call and set up an appointment. Together, we can make sure you have a beautiful smile- now and in the future.
