Eating a Lot of Fiber Can Improve Your Oral Health

Eating a Lot of Fiber Can Improve Your Oral HealthIf you are anything like the majority of our patients, you care about keeping your teeth strong and healthy. To that end, you likely do things like brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing at least every 24 hours, and making it a point to have regular dental cleanings. These are all great practices for your oral health, but did you know that you can do even more? By eating foods with more fiber, you can improve your oral health.

More Fiber for a Better Smile

You very likely already know that you should avoid foods that are high in sugar for the sake of your teeth. In addition to contributing to other issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and more, foods with too much sugar in them will cause the bacteria levels in your mouth to increase. In turn, the elevated bacteria levels mean more of the harmful compounds they produce—which means weaker enamel and teeth that are prone to decay.

In contrast, if you eat foods that contain a lot of fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, the increased fiber content will reduce the overall sugar levels in your mouth. This is because the amount of sugar you consume per bite of food will be lower than it is with foods having less fiber. This means your teeth will last longer and have fewer cavities.

Caring for Your Mouth

Elevating your fiber intake is great for your teeth, but it doesn't stop there. You will experience reduced issues with gum disease as well. Simply put, it just makes sense for your overall health for you to consume more fiber.

If you have any questions about what else you can do to care for your teeth, feel free to reach out to us. We are always here to help you!
