Discovering that you have a tooth which has started to decay can lead to a host of issues for you. Should you opt for a filling, and if so, what type? What about other options? And of course, any time there is decay, you will ultimately have to decide whether the tooth can be saved, or if it should be extracted. Here are some things to consider when making the determination. How Deep Does the Decay Go?A primary factor in deciding what to do with your decayed tooth has to be how deep the decay runs. As you might expect, a tooth that has decay going all the way to the root is going to be much harder to save than one with only superficial decay.Of course, you cannot determine how deep the decay goes simply by looking in the mirror. You'll have to have some dental x-rays done. These can look inside the tooth and show just how far the decay has progressed. Then you will have a good idea as to how likely it is that you are going to be able to save the tooth (or whether you should just have it extracted). How Much of the Tooth is Left?In some cases, even if the decay is not exceedingly deep, you still may need to have the tooth taken out. You will want to consider how much of the tooth will remain once the decay has been removed. If there is just a small area of decay, it can probably be saved, and you can simply have the decay itself removed and replaced with a filling.Ultimately, the decision as to whether to have a tooth extracted or try to save it is up to you. Be sure to carefully consider all your options before making your choice. |
