What to Do if You Grind Your Teeth, But Need a Bridge

Posted on 12/20/2019 by Office - Boone DMD
What to Do if You Grind Your Teeth, But Need a BridgeDental bridges are devices that help fill in gaps between teeth. They are typically used when a person has lost a tooth and have two healthy adjacent teeth that can support the device.

In some cases, bridges can be supported by dental implants if necessary. Bridges are generally used to replace molars, but sometimes used for other teeth.

Many people who need bridges installed struggle with grinding their teeth either at night or during the day. Teeth grinding may have even been the reason they needed to have a bridged installed. Unfortunately, teeth grinding is also bad for bridges.

This is because bridges are normally made of porcelain—a brittle material compared to the enamel of teeth. The pressure from grinding your teeth can cause a dental bridge to break or crack. Luckily, there are solutions to help stop teeth grinding.

What Options Do You Have?
There are two common teeth grinding solutions. The first is to simply be mindful of your teeth grinding. During the daytime, try to tell yourself to not bite down and grind your teeth. This will help save your teeth and jaw from the pressure of grinding. It can be hard to stop at first, but with the right mindset, it's possible to stop your teeth grinding habit.

If you are unable to stop teeth grinding by yourself, there are other options available. One of these options is a mouth guard. Mouth guards are an effective way to reduce the effects of teeth grinding and are particularly helpful to people who grind their teeth at night. If you're interested in a mouth guard or would like to find out other solutions to teeth grinding, give us a call. We can help you by providing the information you need.
