Is Your Insomnia Causing Dental Issues?

Posted on 2/10/2020 by Office - Boone DMD
Is Your Insomnia Causing Dental Issues?Every once in a while, we all struggle to get to bed at a reasonable time. It could be because of children, restlessness, or too much caffeine during the day.

However, did you know your insomnia may be caused by dental issues? Many people don't think dental health has anything to do with their sleep patterns, but it does. Maintaining good dental health can actually help you sleep better at night.

One thing we often see with people who struggle to get a good night's rest is that they suffer from nighttime teeth grinding. Nighttime teeth grinding has the ability to disrupt a person's sleep, and they may not even know about it. This is because when a person grinds their teeth at night, they block their airway, which stops them from breathing.

When a person stops breathing while they sleep, they wake up for a short moment and start breathing normally again. People who suffer from grinding their teeth at night, usually aren't aware that they wake up multiple times a night.

Is There a Way to Cure Nighttime Grinding?

Yes, there is a way to cure nighttime grinding. Many people who suffer from nighttime teeth grinding benefit from the use of a mouth guard while they sleep. A nighttime mouth guard has two functions. First, it softens the impact on the teeth from grinding.

Grinding can cause a lot of stress on the teeth and may even cause them to crack. Second, the mouth guard allows a person to breathe more easily. This is because it keeps the mouth unobstructed from the teeth when they close together.

If you think you're dealing with insomnia, we may be able to help you. Please give our office a call, and we can make an appointment for you. While you're here, we can see if you grind your teeth at night and set up a plan to help you get a good night's rest.
