Gum recession is one of the symptoms related to gum disease. But can this be caused by specific foods? Today we will be going over how certain popular foods can cause gum recession.
Fruit is good for your body, but there are certain types of fruits that can be damaging to both your teeth and gums when eaten in excess- specifically citrus. These popular types of fruit are acidic and can erode enamel and increase your risk of gum disease. It is best to practice moderation when consuming citrus fruits!
Another food that is great for your body, but so much your teeth when consumed too frequently. Tomatoes, like citrus, are also high in their acid content. Tomatoes are usually consumed as toppings for sandwiches and salads, so the actual risk of someone seeing negative effects due to tomatoes and lower than an orange, for example. However, if you are a tomato lover and consume them on their own frequently, we just want to urge you to be careful!
A beverage, but it is one of the worst consumables for your teeth. Soda is loaded with sugar, which is bad enough, but it also is high in acidity, while not providing the health benefits other high sugar, high acid beverages do such as pomegranate and cranberry juice. An easy switch to make from soda would be seltzer water - it still falls under acidic, but nowhere near as bad for your teeth as soda!
Chewy, Sour Candy
Another food that has negative impacts on your teeth is sour, chewy candy. One of the things that make sour candy well... sour, is citric acid. The powder that is tossed on these candies has the ability to cause the tongue to start bleeding and we think a lot of you reading this know exactly what we are talking about!
