The day you have been waiting for finally arrives. Your braces are removed and you can start wearing a retainer. This means that caring for your teeth is different too. While you still need to brush and floss twice a day, you also need to ensure that you keep your new and straighter smile aesthetically pleasing and functional.
Why Tooth Care Differs After You Have Had Braces
When the braces come off, you are basically working with a clean slate. However, because it is harder to brush and floss with braces, you may need to remediate come dental issues. If you have cavities or problems with gingivitis, these issues will need to be managed. Overall, however, your daily dental routine will be easier, and you will spend a minimal amount of time brushing and flossing your teeth. Because you may neglect the gums when you wear braces, you may notice some recession. To prevent further gum problems, be diligent about periodontal care by flossing daily and massaging your gums. You should also use a toothbrush with soft bristles. We recommend the use of an electric toothbrush if you have some recession. An electric toothbrush, which is ADA approved, is gentler on the gums than a manual toothbrush.
How Long Will I Need to Wear My Retainer?
Usually, a removable retainer will need to be worn all the time during the first three months after your braces come off. After that time, you should wear your retainer while you sleep. You can also opt to wear a fixed returner, which can be placed on the back of the teeth to keep them straight. Wearing your retainer should be ongoing after you wear braces, as the appliance keeps the teeth from shifting back in position. In fact, some people wear a fixed retainer for 20 years before they need to replace it. Therefore, wearing your retainer—fixed or removable—should become an ongoing habit.
