What Happens When You Do Not Brush for Long Enough?

Posted on 12/7/2020 by Office - Boone DMD
What Happens When You Do Not Brush for Long Enough?According to research done by our team of professionals, more than 30% of our patients do not brush their teeth for long enough (length of time). 23% of our adult patients have at least gone for at least 2 to 3 days without brushing their teeth, considering that they knew that they were supposed to brush their teeth at least two times a day. But did they know what would happen if they did not brush their teeth? Read on to find out the consequences of not brushing your teeth long enough.

What Happens if You Do Not Brush for a Day?

If you go for 24 hours without brushing, a thin layer of plaque will form on your teeth crown. You might not see the damage physically, but the plaque contains bacteria responsible for dental diseases.

What Happens if You Do Not Brush for a Week?

After going for seven days without bruising, the thin film of plaque will have become thicker. It will only take between 3 to 7 days for you to start developing gingivitis. By that time, your mouth will be producing a smelly odor.

What Happens if You Do Not Brush for a Month?

If you do not brush for a whole month, the plaque build-up will be extraordinarily thick and smelly. The bacteria found in the plaque will start the process of breaking down your teeth. Your gingivitis will have advanced, causing your gums to become swollen and red. If you take a lot of sugar, then the process of tooth decay will have already started. You will start noticing some white spots occurring on your teeth.

How To Maintain Proper Oral Hygiene Standards

Ensure that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes and floss daily. You should also rinse your mouth using a mouthwash or gargle with salty water. If you practice the above, you will have an enhanced smile, healthy gums and teeth, and fresh breath. Visit or contact our offices for more dental hygiene tips.
