A cavity is a decayed portion of your tooth that results from plaque build-up and improper oral hygiene habits. While cavities on your front prominent teeth may be easy to spot, it may be more difficult to locate a cavity on the back teeth. Finding cavities early is an important part of the restoration process and will result in cheaper and less invasive treatment options. There are several signs that a cavity has begun to develop in your mouth. The most obvious is a visible hole or pit on your tooth. This pit is often accompanied by staining that is usually black or brown. Staining and the hole in your tooth are caused by decay and a loss of enamel due to the cavity.
Other non-visual signs of a cavity include things such as a sudden toothache. If your tooth hurts when you bite down, you may have a cavity. Increased sensitivity to hot or cold are also signs of the cavity that should not be ignored.
How Are Cavities Repaired?
Cavities are repaired with one of several treatment options, depending on the size of the cavity and the amount of damage to your tooth. Small cavities can usually be repaired with a dental filling. A filling involves the removal of any decayed material and the placement of a moldable material to fill the void. The material hardens and protects the tooth from further damage.
More severe cavities will require the placement of a crown. A crown is a restoration that completely encapsulates a tooth and protects it from further damage. The worst cavities will require that a tooth be extracted, as it is too damaged to repair or otherwise salvage with restorative procedures.
