Is Fluoride Good for Your Teeth?

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Office - Boone DMD
Is Fluoride Good for Your Teeth?Fluoride is a vital element as far as your teeth health is concerned. This mineral is present in tap water and fluoride toothpaste, and, if available in the right proportions, it is effective against tooth cavities. However, you should not give fluoride to children below three years as it may result in fluoride poisoning since young children will swallow more of the toothpaste.

Prevention of Tooth Cavities

Children growing in places with limited availability of fluoride in tap water are more prone to tooth cavities. To prevent this, local governments add fluoride to their drinking water. Fluoride slows down tooth decay by mineralizing teeth. When cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth release acids, the mouth pH goes down. The fluoride, calcium, and phosphorus released from tooth demineralization form a superior enamel structure resistant to acids and hence decay. This layer has a higher concentration of fluoride, so you need an adequate fluoride supply to prevent tooth decay. When your saliva is less acidic, fluoride will mineralize your teeth by replenishing calcium and phosphate ions.

Other Benefits of Fluoride to Your Teeth

In children, fluoride in small doses aids in the development of strong permanent teeth. It also forms part of the saliva and strengthens teeth, making them resistant to acids and damage. This reduces enamel wear, preventing tooth sensitivity and decay. Given the above benefits of fluoride, it is important to ensure fluoride access both naturally and medically. You can talk to your local government to check whether your tap water contains the right supply of fluoride. If you cannot meet your fluoride requirement through food and water, you can schedule a fluoride treatment with us. During the treatment, we will apply a gel, varnish, or foam for a few minutes. We will then allow your teeth to rest for about 30 minutes to absorb the fluoride. For more details on the benefits of fluoride for your teeth, contact our office today.
