Ways We Can Tell Your Tooth Has a Cavity

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Office - Boone DMD
Ways We Can Tell Your Tooth Has a CavityMost people would probably prefer not to have cavities or even wish that on their enemies! In fact, parents instruct kids from a young age to brush their teeth and floss twice a day to avoid them. Unfortunately, many people will develop cavities at some point. It would be nice to know, though, before you have a toothache, if you have a cavity. To understand the how to detect a cavity, first, you have to understand what a cavity is all about.

A cavity is a hole in your tooth. This hole forms when acid erodes the tooth's hard surface, which is called enamel. Three types of cavities are common. A smooth surface cavity will generally form on the side of the tooth. A root cavity tends to favor the bottom of the tooth. A pit and fissure cavity is found on the chewing surface, most commonly in the back of the mouth.

How We Find Cavities

You can guess if you have a cavity. If you experience hot and cold sensitivity or have a chronic toothache, you may have a cavity. Darker stains on your teeth may be indicative of a cavity as well. The premolars and molars found in the back of your mouth are common victims of cavities.

We can determine if you have a cavity too. We use dental x-rays to get a better look at your teeth. Specifically, we use bitewing x-rays to zero in on a portion of your mouth. By looking at the image, we can tell where the tooth decay is in your mouth. We can also use lasers to find cavities. Using a laser cavity detection system, we can utilize light wave reflections to detect cavities. In a few seconds, we can find areas where the light reflected back, which is indicative of tooth decay.
