The Safety Of Dental X-rays During Pregnancy

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Office - Boone DMD
The Safety Of Dental X-rays During PregnancyYou have probably heard that getting an X-ray during pregnancy can harm your baby. This, in theory, is true. However, there are some exceptions where not receiving the study represents a greater risk than receiving it. We will tell you more about it below.

Is It Safe to Receive X-rays While Pregnant?

Generally, receiving an X-ray is a safe procedure, even during pregnancy. Nevertheless, there is some controversy about it, so our dentists only limit themselves to performing them when the benefits outweigh the possible risks. This type of study provides us with important information that can save your life.

Not all X-rays are equal, but most represent minimal exposure to the uterus and the baby. With dental X-rays, exposure to any part of the body other than the teeth is practically zero. That said, if you were to have an X-ray of the torso or abdomen, the risks increase, so you should always specify that you are pregnant. Dental X-rays are among the safest radiation procedures for pregnant patients.

Will The Baby Have Any Side Effects?

Neither type of dental X-ray has enough radiation to cause birth defects in the baby. Still, we must take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of both, as in other types of medical procedures.

You should always inform us if you are pregnant or if you suspect it, any treatment that is not essential (like any cosmetic procedure) should wait until after the baby is born. If an X-ray study is strictly necessary, we will do everything possible to do it after the first trimester and before the last half of the third trimester. Furthermore, you will always have your thoracic, abdominal and thyroid protective wear. Please come to our offices and our trained staff will take care of you.
