Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Office - Boone DMD
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?Although no one wants to have pearly yellows, the use of teeth whitening strips or gels might have a downside. While you may want to whiten your teeth, you should be cautious because these products can do more harm than good, especially if you don't use them the proper way. Perhaps you are asking if whiten strips and gels are really a safe way of brightening your smile.

Teeth Bleaching and its Damage to Dentin

You may have used them or seen them; the sticky strips and the gel-filled trays that work to whiten the teeth. These whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide and you can easily get them over-the-counter. The strips and gels do a great job to lighten teeth and remove stains, but hydrogen peroxide is known to damage protects within the dentin layer of the teeth, according to the results of a study presented at the special meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2019. Dentin is that hard tissue lying beneath the surface of the enamel of a tooth. Its damage can badly impact the health of your teeth, and you could risk losing your teeth or experiencing extreme pain.

Safe Steps to Whiten your Teeth

Hydrogen peroxide bleaching has been used to whiten teeth. Dentists can agree that after decades of use of hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching products, there haven't been increased problems like tooth fractures and cavity risks after bleaching. The American Dental Association (ADA) also says that hydrogen peroxide teeth whiteners are effective and safe. However, if you have to use them, make sure that they have an ADA Seal of Acceptance. Also, follow instructions and see a dentist concerning your teeth discoloration. Ask the dentist if the products are right for your whitening needs.

If you are worried about using teeth whitening products, seek the help of a dentist to get professional whitening. Dentists are properly trained and experienced in whitening teeth and can safely give you pearly white teeth. Contact our dental office for professional teeth whitening.
