What are Dental Crowns?Dental crowns are custom made caps that fit over the top of damaged teeth. They look just like your real teeth and restore the tooth’s ability to help you chew your food.
Dental crowns are a permanent dental prosthesis that is attached to your natural tooth with permanent dental adhesive. Crowns can be made of a variety of materials to fit the aesthetic you desire and to accommodate any budget.
Do I Need a Dental Crown?People find themselves needing dental crowns for a variety of reasons, but most reasons have to do with the failing structural integrity of a tooth. If a tooth has experienced significant decay and needs a root canal, we might recommend a crown. Depending on the amount of decay, the route of treatment leans towards restorative or extraction.
If a tooth experiences significant trauma, a crown might also be recommended. Additionally, a common reason a patient might need a crown is if an amalgam filling is failing, and the tooth cannot support another filling.
What is the Dental Crown Process? Thanks to our in-office CEREC technology, we can provide you with crowns in a single visit, eliminating the need for a temporary crown or a second visit. CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramics, utilizes CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology to create your custom crown while you wait. Your tooth still needs to be prepared, but rather than taking an impression with putty; we take a digital impression of your mouth. The image then shows up on our computer monitor. Using specialized software, we can custom design a perfectly fitting crown that will blend in seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth. Once we have finished designing your crown, the information is then sent to a milling machine, where your crown is created. Once it is finished, we are then able to cement it in place.
