If you are unhappy with the current state of your smile, we can help. At Boones Landing Dental Center, Dr. Boone offers a number of cosmetic dental conditions to improve the appearance of your smile. One way to improve your smile is porcelain veneers.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your teeth. These shells can be used to change the size, shape, color, or length of your teeth.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
•
Natural Appearance: Porcelain veneers provide a natural tooth appearance while improving the aesthetics of your smile. The color of each veneer can also help to brighten your smile.
•
Stain Resistance: We choose to use porcelain because of it its stain-resistant and mimics the light-reflective properties of natural enamel. It is also quite durable and a good choice for your anterior (front) teeth.
•
Conservative Approach: Many patients choose veneers because they are considered a conservative approach to cosmetic and restorative change. Other alternatives, such as dental crowns, require a complete reshaping of your enamel.
•
Natural Preservation: Veneers allow us to preserve more of your natural tooth, which is better for your oral health in the long-term.
Are Porcelain Veneers Right for You?
Veneers can be used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, worn down, chipped, broken, misaligned, or even gapped. Dr. Margaret Boone will determine if you are a suitable candidate for porcelain veneers during a consultation appointment. We will take into consideration your oral health and available treatment options. Porcelain veneers are considered an irreversible process, so we need to be certain before moving forward with treatment. You should also actively participate in the design process. Be sure to share your preferences with us so we can include them in your treatment plan.
What is the Process for Teeth Veneers?
The porcelain veneer process is usually completed in two appointments.
1.
First Appointment: During your first appointment, we will prepare each tooth that is going to receive a veneer. Preparation includes removing about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the front surface of the tooth. Once your teeth have been properly reshaped, we will take an impression. This impression will be sent to our dental laboratory, where our lab technicians will use it to fabricate your porcelain veneers. This process can take several weeks to complete. For unsightly teeth, we may recommend temporary veneers in the meantime.
2.
Second Appointment: When your porcelain veneers are ready, we can schedule your second appointment. During this appointment, Dr. Margaret Boone will remove any temporaries and check the margins on your porcelain veneers. In some cases, we may need to trim excess material. The veneer color may also be adjusted with the shade of cement we use. Once we are satisfied with the fit and look, we will clean, polish, and etch each tooth that is receiving a veneer. This will strengthen the bonding process. Next, we will apply a special cement to the surface of the veneer and place it over your tooth. Once it is in the proper position, we will use a curing light to harden the cement and expedite the process. Lastly, we will remove any excess cement and make final adjustments if necessary.
